This is another new author that I discovered via Instagram, and it intrigued me because it reminded me of the types of books I read as a teenager. Growing up, I was very into authors like Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker because of the faith themes woven into well-written stories. And Heartbreaker, as well as the first book in the series (Heartmender), were such enjoyable throwbacks to that time in my life!
First, I have to say how gorgeous these covers are! It was one of the things that drew me to the books at first, and then when I read the description it pulled me into the world immediately because I had so many questions. Both books follow the story of Addie, a young woman who is about to participate in the local tradition of extracting her heart for trade. However, she ends up discovering her heart is much more valuable than a simple trade for beauty or wealth! The first book follows her adventures as she finds out just how valuable her pure heart is, while also searching for her long-lost brother.
(Fair Warning: If you haven’t read the first book, I do recommend doing so before continuing to read my review of the second book since there may be some unintentional spoilers!)
“I had stared evil in the eye and almost died. But I had also seen life, and because of that, I was standing strong today.”
Hearbreaker continues Addie’s story, having discovered her destiny as the prophesied warrior meant to save the kingdoms. But, I have to say my favorite part of this story is the development of her relationship with Silas. In the first book, Addie’s feelings for Silas become apparent; but we’re left wondering if he feels the same. The answer comes almost immediately in the second book; but as with any relationship, there are things the two have to figure out. And all while trying to fulfill their respective destinies.
One thing that I absolutely loved about this book was how the story never felt slow, but instead moved forward at an appropriate pace. I actually panicked when I realized how close I was to the end because I felt like there was so much left to finish! However, the ending Burton choose is perfection, leaving just the right amount for the conclusion of the trilogy. Of course, the successive twists at the end shatter my heart into a thousand pieces and left me staring at my Kindle in shock when I was done reading…but that’s a mark of a good writer!
“When surrounded by darkness, there is always a glimmer of light.”
Since it is Christian fiction, the presence of Biblical themes are incorporated throughout; but they aren’t distracting, nor do they detract from the overall movement of the story. In fact, the character development is very natural and deals realistically with the author’s chosen lessons. The imagery is beautiful done and really draws the reader into the world Burton creates. It also ties in the themes and images from the first book in a really creative way, which I appreciated.
I read both books in just a few days as I became so wrapped up in the story! So now of course I have to wait until the 3rd book to be released in September 2021: Heartrender.
It’s an easy decision to award Heartbreaker 5/5 stars, and I’d recommend it for anyone looking for a really excellent Christian fantasy read to pull you into a whole new world!
